SynGas sewage sludge gasification plant in Balingen

The SynGas plant in Balingen is our oldest and first sewage sludge gasification plant. Initially it was built in 2001 for approx. 1,000 t/a DS. At that time, the synthesis gas was added to the digester gas from sludge digestion and burnt in the digester gas CHP. In 2010, additional municipalities joined the sludge disposal association and the sewage sludge treatment plant was expanded to a capacity of approx. 2,000 t/a DS.

At the same time, the previously operated solar dryer was replaced by a mechanical belt dryer. In order to cover the heat consumption of the sewage sludge dryer, the use of synthesis gas was changed to pure thermal utilization. Since then, the synthesis gas has been completely converted into heat in a combustion chamber and the heat is fed into the dryer.

The Balingen wastewater treatment plant treats the wastewater of the city and the surrounding towns and communities of Geislingen, Dormettingen, Dotternhausen and Albstadt-Laufen. It is designed for a connection value of 125,000 PE and treats around 10,000,000 m3 of wastewater per year. With the aim of making the sewage treatment plant energy self-sufficient, a CHP plant was initially built to use the digested gas.

In order to also use the energy content of the digested sewage sludge, the sludge disposal association had a KOPF SynGas sewage sludge gasification plant erected on the site of the sewage treatment plant in 2001.

2001 Plant Balingen

The sludge gasification plant provides the following performance:

  • Capacity: 5 to/d dried sludge with a dried substance of 75-85%
  • Electrical power output of the CHP Module: 75 kW with synthesis gas
  • Own electrical consumption: 15 kW
  • Net electrical power output: 60 kW
  • Cold gas efficiency: 70%
  • Calorific value of the produced gas: 2,5-5 MJ/Nm3, depending on the calorific value of the gasified sludge
