Energy-intensive industries

Our technology provides a combustible synthesis gas from sewage sludge, which can be made available as substitute fuel in energy-intensive industrial combustion processes.

Increased overall energy efficiency

Previously unused waste heat from the industrial process coupled with our technology can be used for the upstream drying of the sewage sludge in a sewage sludge dryer. For this reason, enough energy remains in the synthesis gas when the dried sewage sludge is gasified with our process. Therfore, our synthesis gas is highly suitable as a fuel gas for industrial firing processes.

Substitute for fossil fuels

Our synthesis gas can be used as a substitute fuel for coal or natural gas, for example. This enables the decarbonisation of industrial processes as well as the reduction of dependence on fossil fuels and fuel price development.
Furthermore, synthesis gas from sewage sludge is itself considered a CO2-neutral fuel.

Earnings from sewage sludge acceptance

Sewage sludge is a waste product of water treatment and, in future, must by law be fed into a thermal recycling process. The use of synthesis gas from sewage sludge as a substitute fuel can therefore not only enables savings in energy costs, but also generates additonal earnings in the form of a gate fee from sewage sludge acceptance.

Securing the sewage sludge intake in the long term

The phosphorus contained in the sewage sludge is separated from the synthesis gas in the SÜLZLE KOPF SynGas process and is provided in an ash that can be further processed for phosphorus recovery. Thereby all legal requirements for phosphorus recovery are fulfilled and utilisation of sewage sludge in the industry is ensured even after 2029 (Germany) or 2026 (Switzerland). The separation of the material flows also means that many original components of the sewage sludge are not introduced into the industrial production process with the synthesis gas.

Our technology has been developed for use in energy-intensive, industrial combustion processes with high combustion temperatures.
This is particularly true for the following industries:

  • Lime kilns
  • Calcined clay production
  • Brickworks
  • Waste-to-energy plants
  • energy-intensive processes in the production of paper, glass, etc.
